5 WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR BARTENDING TIPS
1. DON’T KEEP CUSTOMERS WAITING
When someone walks up to your bar, they want one thing: a drink.. ASAP. If you are helping another customer, acknowledge your new customer and tell him you’ll be right with him. As you get faster and you become more efficient, practice taking orders from new customers WHILE helping other customers. This way, when you’ve finished with your fist customer, you can immediately make the new customer his/her drink.
2. LEARN YOUR REGULAR’S NAMES AND WHAT THEY DRINK
Work hard at remembering people’s faces and their corresponding names. As you get the hang of this, remember what they drink. People like to be remembered. If you can ask, “What are you drinking, Bob, your regular drink?” it will equal more money in your pocket.
3. HAVE SOME COCKTAILS IN MIND FOR INDECISIVE CUSTOMERS
Some people know exactly what they want; many don’t. If you have one of the latter come up to your bar, be ready with some simple suggestions. Ask them what kind of liquor they prefer. If, for example, they say they like sweet, vodka-based drinks, offer a sex on the beach or a cosmopolitan. If they say they like whiskey, offer a whiskey sour or an old-fashioned. Be creative and helpful.
4. UNDERSTAND YOUR CUSTOMERS NEEDS/WANTS
Many people want to talk to the bartender. They want to riff with you and get to know you. Other people are there to drink and converse with only the people they came in with. Read your customers. You will quickly learn which type of person is which. Once you’ve learned how to notice what your customers want, your tips will increase accordingly.
5. BE FAST.
This is related to number 1 on this list. No one wants to wait for service, for their drink, or for their change. Learn how to pour quickly, chill drinks quickly, open beers quickly, and handle money quickly (and efficiently). The faster you are, the more tips you’ll make!
